The magic of local wrestling

Attending a local wrestling show is one of the most exhilarating experiences for any wrestling fan. The intimacy of it all is what truly gets the juices flowing. Standing shoulder to shoulder with fellow enthusiasts, hearing the bang of the mat after every body slam and missed top-rope elbow drop, and exchanging banter with the wrestlers—especially the heels—creates an atmosphere that is second to none. It’s seriously some of the most fun you can have on a night out.

Here in Adelaide, South Australia, we’re fortunate to have access to two of the best independent wrestling promotions in Australia: Riot City Wrestling (RCW) and World Series Wrestling (WSW).

Admittedly, I was a late bloomer when it came to attending local wrestling shows. My first RCW show wasn’t until 2022, and from the second the action started, I was kicking myself for not going earlier. Held at the Adelaide Fringe on a warm autumn day inside a massive tent, it was a completely different experience from the WWE shows I’d attended at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. Yet, in many ways, it was just as thrilling—if not more so.

Formed in 2006, RCW boasts an impressive alumni roster that includes current WWE superstars Rhea Ripley, Bronson Reed, and NXT newcomer Zaria (formerly Delta). RCW hosts regular, action-packed shows across South Australia. While some might assume that local wrestlers lack the polish of their TV counterparts, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Over the years, I’ve been blown away by the skill and talent of RCW performers like Matt Hayter, Chris Basso, The Parea, Grimm, and the aforementioned Delta. They consistently leave the crowd in awe, chanting for more!

RCW’s shows are as diverse as their venues. From community centres and showgrounds to regional areas and even breweries—if there’s enough space for a ring, RCW will be there. There’s something magical about knowing RCW is a proven breeding ground for future WWE talent. Who knows? The next RCW show you attend might feature a future international star.

On a larger scale, World Series Wrestling (WSW) has been running shows across Australia since 2005. After a 10-year hiatus and a pandemic-induced break, WSW has been back in action with regular shows since 2017. Their events feature international stars like Brian Cage, Matt Cardona, Shawn Spears, Nic Nemeth, Tenille Dashwood, The Young Bucks, Jordynne Grace, Frankie Kazarian, Eric Young, Austin Aries, Ricochet, Chelsea Green, and John Morrison (Johnny Downunder).

Despite the smaller, more intimate WSW crowds, these wrestlers perform with the same professionalism and energy as they do in front of thousands in arenas and stadiums. Their accessibility is a highlight, with many happy to chat, shake hands, and show gratitude to fans who support them by purchasing merch or photo ops.

What both RCW and WSW offer is something special. From wrestlers fighting through the crowd and leaping off second-storey balconies to pouring beer over their opponents, anything can happen at these shows!

If you’ve never attended a local wrestling event, you’re seriously missing out. Every friend I’ve introduced to RCW and WSW has left impressed and many have become regular attendees. Watching these athletes lace up their boots and perform live only deepens your respect for their craft and commitment.

So, why not grab a ticket and experience it for yourself? You might just discover your new favorite pastime.
